    Dr Neil Sharma is an ophthalmologist with special interests in cataract surgery, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, aviation ophthalmology, RMS driving assessments and general ophthalmology. 

    After completing his specialist training at Sydney Eye Hospital, Neil undertook a fellowship in general ophthalmology at the Australian School of Advanced Medicine and Macquarie University Hospital. He graduated with a Master of Public Health from the University of New South Wales in 2004, and a Master of Medicine in cataract and refractive surgery from the University of Sydney in 2013. This followed his undergraduate medical degree at UNSW where he graduated from medicine with honours. Prior to this, Neil received a NSW Premier's Award for Excellence and the Australian Student's Prize.

    Dr Neil Sharma trained as the Senior Clinical Fellow in Medical Retina at the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. He gained experience in the management of conditions including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disease, central serous retinopathy and other retinal diseases. Neil trained in the use of anti-VEGF medications, multispot retinal lasers, wide-field angiography, and the use of photodynamic therapy (PDT). Dr Sharma was involved in several research and audit projects in addition to his clinical work. He gave teaching presentations at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University.

    Dr Sharma has a strong interest in research, and has published in the peer-reviewed medical literature. He has presented at numerous local, national and international ophthalmology conferences. He is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed medical journals.

     

    Neil has been awarded several prestigious prizes, including the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO) undergraduate Prize and Medal, the RANZCO Eye Foundation Medical Retina scholarship, and the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Patron’s Prize.

    Dr Neil Sharma has been a staff-specialist ophthalmologist at Westmead Hospital since 2012 performing clinics and cataract surgery. He is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and the University of Wollongong. Neil is interested in raising public awareness of eye diseases and eye health. He can be heard regularly on 2GB Radio in Sydney, 4BC Radio in Brisbane and other stations on the Macquarie Broadcast Network across NSW and Queensland.
