Laser Vision Correction Options
SMILE Pro Surgery
Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE Pro) is a minimally invasive laser eye surgery procedure that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism through a small keyhole incision . The laser is used to to create a thin, precise disc of corneal tissue called a lenticule, which is removed through an incision sized less than 3mm. There is greater corneal structural stability and less risk of post operative dry eye than some of the other options.
SMILE Pro is a more recent advancement, which uses the most advanced laser from Zeiss, the VISUMAX 800, to halve the laser treatment time to 10-13 seconds per eye. Our surgeon will advise if you are suitable for this option.
To date, more than 10 million eyes have been successfully treated with Zeiss SMILE and SMILE Pro surgery, and increasing.
LASIK
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) reshapes the cornea using advanced laser technology and remains one of the most well-known options for reducing dependence on glasses or contact lenses. It can be used for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
LASIK involves using a femtosecond laser to create a very thin flap on the surface of the cornea, which is then temporarily folded back to allow excimer laser to the corneal tissue, before the flap is replaced.
LASIK is usually associated with rapid visual recovery and minimal discomfort
PRK
Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a flap-free technique used to correct refractive error. It has the advantage of being able to be performed in some patients who are not suitable for LASIK or SMILE Pro, and those requiring greater corneal structural stability. PRK has a long safety record and proven reliable results over decades. Recovery following surgery usually takes longer, with discomfort and blurred vision lasting the first few days to weeks.
PRESBYOND
PRESBYOND is an advanced laser treatment designed to help suitable patients reduce dependence on reading glasses as they age. PRESBYOND combines the simplicity and accuracy of corneal refractive surgery with the benefits of increased depth of focus while retaining visual quality.
Our ophthalmologist Dr Linda Zheng will discuss laser refractive surgery options with you.
