Amsler Grid Chart

An Amsler grid is a simple home monitoring tool used to detect changes in central vision that may occur with conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, epiretinal membrane and other diseases affecting the macula. Regular use may help identify new distortion, blurred areas or missing patches in the central field of vision, sometimes before symptoms become obvious in day-to-day activities.

Patients with macular degeneration or other retinal conditions affecting the central retina are encouraged to check each eye separately at least once a week while wearing their usual reading glasses.

The grid should be held at a comfortable reading distance in good lighting. If the lines appear distorted, wavy, blurred or incomplete, or if there is a noticeable change compared with previous testing, you should contact your eye care professional promptly for further assessment.
