We understand that life can get busy, and important tasks such as booking your CASA eye examination can sometimes be left until the last minute. At Eye and Retina Specialists Sydney, we do our best to accommodate urgent appointment requests at a reasonable price, helping you complete the required testing and avoid delays in submitting your results to CASA.

Dr Neil Sharma is a Civil Aviation Safety Authority Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist at Eye and Retina Specialists Sydney. We provide aviation eye examinations for student, private and commercial pilots, aircrew and air traffic controllers.

When is a CASA eye examination required?

CASA requires an eye examination for the initial issue of Class 1 and Class 3 medical certificates. A further eye examination is required at the first renewal after age 60 and then every two years.

CASA may also require further ophthalmic assessment following reduced or borderline vision results, previous eye surgery, a diagnosed eye condition or difficulty with colour vision screening.

What can be tested during the appointment?

An appointment may include:

  • visual acuity and refraction

  • ocular alignment and binocular vision

  • intraocular-pressure measurement

  • colour vision assessment

  • visual-field testing

  • examination of the anterior segment, retina and optic nerve

Where required, optical coherence tomography imaging, retinal photography and contrast-sensitivity testing can also be performed. For pilots who require further colour vision testing, our clinic has an OPTEC 900 for CASA Tier 2 colour vision assessment.

Most required investigations can be completed during the same visit. A detailed ophthalmology report is then prepared for the CASA aviation medical certification process.

Please bring your photo identification, Aviation Reference Number, glasses, spare glasses and any correspondence from CASA. Details of previous eye surgery and relevant ophthalmology reports are also helpful.

Eye and Retina Specialists Sydney is located in the Green Square precinct, close to Sydney Airport, with free on-site basement parking.

If your CASA eye examination has been left until the last minute, call (02) 9699 0001 and we will try our best to arrange an urgent appointment.
